The Private Aviation Buyer’s Guide to South Florida New Developments
For buyers who own or regularly charter private aircraft, proximity to a quality FBO (fixed-base operator) terminal is as important a factor in residential location selection as views, brand, and building amenities. The difference between a 45-minute drive to the airport and a 12-minute drive is the difference between a usable private aviation lifestyle and one that exists mostly in theory.
The South Florida FBO Landscape

South Florida has multiple FBO options serving different residential markets with dramatically different drive times:
Opa-locka Executive Airport (KOPF): The closest FBO to Miami’s urban residential markets — Brickell, Edgewater, Coconut Grove, Miami Beach. Drive times of 20–30 minutes from most Miami addresses, compared to 45–75 minutes to Fort Lauderdale Executive or Miami International’s FBO terminals during peak hours. Opa-locka serves a range of aircraft up to heavy jets; it does not accommodate the largest ultra-long-range jets (Global 7500, G700 class) as efficiently as Fort Lauderdale Executive.
Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport (KFXE): Florida’s busiest general aviation airport and the FBO of choice for Fort Lauderdale, Boca Raton, and Palm Beach area buyers. Signature Flight Support’s FXE terminal is consistently rated among the best FBO experiences in the Southeast United States. Drive time from Fort Lauderdale luxury addresses: 15–25 minutes. Drive from most Miami addresses: 45–75 minutes depending on traffic.
Palm Beach International Airport (KPBI) / North Palm Beach: The dominant FBO for West Palm Beach buyers, with several competitive FBO operators and a consistent cadence of private aviation traffic driven by the Palm Beach winter season. Drive time from West Palm Beach luxury addresses: 10–20 minutes — one of the best airport proximity ratios in South Florida.
Miami International Airport (KMIA) — Sheltair and Signature: MIA’s FBO terminals serve Miami’s commercial and private aviation needs but are less preferred for private aviation operations due to the airport’s commercial traffic complexity and longer taxi times.
Which South Florida Markets Offer the Best Private Aviation Access

Best overall: West Palm Beach. The combination of Palm Beach International’s proximity (10–20 minutes from luxury addresses), the airport’s quality FBO infrastructure, and the Sheltair/Signature terminals’ service level makes West Palm Beach the most operationally efficient private aviation market in South Florida. Buyers at Mandarin Oriental WPB, Ritz-Carlton WPB, Banyan Tree WPB, or Mr. C WPB are within 15 minutes of a top-tier FBO.

Best for Fort Lauderdale buyers: Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport. The FXE terminal is 15–25 minutes from Fort Lauderdale’s luxury residential addresses — making the Four Seasons Fort Lauderdale, Pier Sixty-Six, and surrounding Intracoastal addresses highly functional for frequent private aviation users.
Most complex: Miami Beach. Despite Miami International and Opa-locka being nominally accessible, traffic on the causeways connecting Miami Beach to the mainland can produce drive times of 45–90 minutes during peak hours — making Miami Beach the least operationally convenient South Florida market for frequent private aviation users.
