How would you use Pantone's Color of the Year 2014, Radiant Orchid, in a living space?

Radiant Orchid is a statement.  I would use it for impact, placing it as the first thing you see upon entering a home. It would pop as wall color in a foyer or front hall, paired with a clean gray-white trim. Or, I might use it in a front staircase carpet beneath neutral walls playing off its gray undertones. In either case, the bold surprise of this color should give way to quieter, cooler tones in adjoining rooms where it could be echoed in patterned fabrics and other decor accents.

What's one cool new trend you predict for 2014?

I think we will be seeing the resurgence of mid-century or "old school" furniture styled in the 1940s, 50s, and 60s that would now be considered classic.

If you had an unlimited budget, what is the first change you would make to your own home or personal space?

That's easy. I live in a 1920s era home, which we renovated twenty-five years ago. Now, I would enlarge and open up the kitchen and family room and try to attain more living space in the areas where we all now tend to spend the most time.

What is the most difficult type of client to work with?

The most challenging clients are the ones who have not worked with a designer before and who believe that this is something they could do just as well themselves -- with "a little help."  They do not yet have an understanding of what the process entails. With patience, careful listening and clear communication from me, the client should come to realize the complexity and value of the work I'm doing. If I can establish a relationship of mutual respect and shared expectations, everyone will be more comfortable proceeding with the project.
