What you hear is true. In the past few months, luxury home buyers are looking for and purchasing large estates where they and their families can spread out and feel safe and comfortable. Oregon, especially near Portland, has seen an increase in luxury home sales in neighborhoods and towns where the homes provide a sense of comfort.

According to Terry Sprague, owner and founder of LUXE Christie’s International Real Estate, the exclusive affiliate of Christie’s International Real Estate for Oregon and Washington, the bedroom communities of West Linn, Lake Oswego, and Portland’s Dunthorpe neighborhood are areas affluent buyers are flocking to in recent days. “These locales have true lifestyle properties,” says Sprague. “Buyers are seeking estates where they can now live, play and work. People are embracing properties that you might say have their own sense of community.”

“People really are ‘living’ at home more these days,” explains Sprague. “Pre-COVID, our buyers were working in downtown offices, playing at country clubs and dining out. Post-COVID, they are reintroducing these activities at home and looking for properties that can accommodate them.” Property estates with room and flexibility are invaluable now as buyers want usable space inside for working, entertainment and homeschooling and outside space for activities like swimming, gardening, sports, and relaxation.

Spacious homes on large, private lots can be found throughout Dunthorpe, West Linn and Lake Oswego making these communities attractive to new “safe haven” buyers. In addition, the cities of West Linn and Lake Oswego have done an excellent job at addressing the needs of its residents and adapting to the post-COVID world. Local businesses have embraced a new style of commerce, the top-rated school districts have developed programs aimed at keeping students engaged and prospering during the upcoming school year, and the cities have been upgrading their technology to meet the increased demand by residents.

When COVID hit the United States this spring, the assumption was that the housing market would slump; however, Sprague has seen quite the opposite trend. “I’ve seen an uptick in out-of-state buyers looking for property in Oregon,” says Sprague. “Buyers have sped up their plans and are moving very quickly. I have been selling multi-million dollar homes at a record pace.”
