London-based architectural firm Foster & Partners will design 425 Park Avenue, the first office tower on Manhattan’s Park Avenue in 50 years. The skyscraper is slated for completion in 2018.
Three years ago, Foster & Partners competed against Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners, OMA, and Zaha Hadid Architects to be chosen for the refashioning of the New York Tower located on 425 Park Avenue. (At the time, the location was preparing for construction of the Lehman Brothers Bank.)
The office tower will be an urban contribution to Park Avenue’s midtown belt—a once-prominent office district. Standing 853 feet tall, 425 Park Avenue will not be a record New York skyscraper, but the project focuses on functional aspects such as the impressive open spaces, amenity terraces, and triple-height sky lobby with glass canted walls for public conferences.
To be built in three vertical sections with promenades on each landing, the jutting tower resembles the Two World Trade Center with more pronounced, sharper edges.
