#1: President Obama’s Martha’s Vineyard Vacation Home

President Obama's Vacation Home

The President and his family vacationed at this $22.5 million Martha’s Vineyard residence for eight days in August 2013. The home, Chilmark Pond, is now the most expensive listing on the island. Built in 1961, the 10-acre compound was completely redesigned—with ocean and pond views in mind—by Seattle architect Rick Sundberg and landscape architect Steve Stimson in 2006. Its contemporary aesthetic features an open floor plan with floor-to-ceiling windows and custom millwork. The estate, which has three beachfront lots, features a 6,967-square-foot main house and a separate two-bedroom guesthouse. The main house has six bedrooms, seven bathrooms, a chef’s kitchen, three fireplaces, and a half basketball court and home gym—the latter two much to Obama’s delight. Other amenities include a luxurious infinity pool, a private boat dock, and a secluded master suite with its own den.

Table Rock Ranch—located between Vail and Steamboat Springs—was purchased by Joseph “Rusty” Walter III, and his wife Elizabeth, in 2003. The magnificent estate features a 3,400-square-foot main lodge. Despite its name, the building has no bedrooms, but serves only as a gathering place for residents and visitors to dine and relax. The grand space features cathedral ceilings, a stone fireplace, a family room with a pool table and shuffleboard, a kitchen, office, and two bathrooms. The main lodge is flanked on either side by two 1,500-square-foot homes, both with two bedrooms, a kitchen, and covered porches. Also on the property is a third home; it has two bedrooms in its 765-square-feet of living space. Enjoy breathtaking views and miles of wildlife habitats for $18.5 million.

#3: Berry Gordy of Motown Records’ One-Time Estate

Berry Gordy's Motown Mansion

Berry Gordy—now 85-years-old—lived in this Detroit residence from 1967 to 2002, at which time a neighbor purchased and thoughtfully restored the property. The Italian Renaissance Revival-style mansion is situated on two-point-two acres and boasts a 10,500-square-foot main house and a 4,400-square-foot pool house. The $1.295 property—which is the highest priced estate in Detroit—has five bedrooms, nine bathrooms, a chef’s kitchen with granite countertops, an Olympic-sized swimming pool, bowling alley, billiards room, and gymnasium.

Appropriately named the “White Mansion,” this 11,000-square-foot home—designed by Pritzker Architect Prize winner Richard Meier—is completely white both inside and out. The architect inhabited the Long Island residence located on 4.8 acres of secluded land in Old Westbury. Meier designed the one-of-a-kind home in 1972, but the five-bedroom, eight-bathroom home has since been completely updated to include all modern amenities. Currently asking $11.8 million, this “White Mansion” has abundant natural light that floods through the home’s numerous skylights and multi-story windows and features a pool, tennis court, and pond—all perfect for entertainment.

#5: Luxurious Seven-Acre Pigeon Forge Estate

Pretty in Pigeon Forge

This wonderful seven-acre estate in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee has a private lake and breathtaking views of the Smoky Mountains. Enter the property through a guarded, gated entrance, and explore the endless paths, bridges, and water features that wind across the beautiful grounds. The 9,709-square-foot main house has six bedrooms and eight bathrooms, as well as endless space for entertaining, fireplaces in nearly every room, and a number of terraces with spectacular views. The mansion also features an indoor pool and fitness center, while outside a tennis court offers another option for exercise. The $1.995 million property is wired with security cameras throughout and has an additional guest/caretaker’s house.
