Along Costa Rica’s northern Pacific coast, nestled in the hills of the Nicoya peninsula, is a sprawling estate dubbed Playa Barrigona.

Owned by actor and Oscar-winning director Mel Gibson, the picturesque property is currently on the market for $29.8 million. It includes three spacious villas enveloped by 500 acres of lush, privately-owned jungle, and serves as a supremely luxurious and secluded tropical retreat.

The 9,193-square-foot Spanish Colonial-style complex built in 2002 is only a short walk away from sumptuous, white-sand beaches.

Playa Barrigona boasts many architectural features, including vaulted ceilings, intricately-carved Costa Rican wood (native to the area), Spanish and Italian tiles, beguiling arches, and ochre paint.

Casa Guanacaste—the largest of the three separate villas that comprise the estate—claims seven of the 11 total bedrooms, and eight of the 14 bathrooms.

Meanwhile Casa Barrigona has a poolside cottage, while Casa Dorada touts a loft with additional living space.

Picture-perfect mountain and ocean views, a swimming pool, and a 3,173-square-foot open-air dining hall are only a few of this compound’s many sensational benefits. In addition, a traditional Indonesian hut shipped from Bali (and re-assembled on-site) is located on the premises (shown below). For those traveling to this remote sanctuary by air, there is also a grass helipad.

Playa Barrigona offers extreme solitude and serenity to its occupants, which happens to be this particular escape’s two main selling points (in addition to its overall beauty).

The Lethal Weapon star purchased the property in 2007 for $25.8 million, according to a recent Vanity Fair report. It was originally listed in 2010 for $35 million.
