How would you use Pantone’s Color of the Year 2014, Radiant Orchid, in a living space?

The Caribbean allows us to use wild and vibrant colors in architecture. Radiant Orchid in a mix of grays and black highlights would make for a stunning kitchen backdrop. Upper cabinets in radiant orchid, with counters in Cambria’s Greystone and Flintblack engineered stone would be elegant and dramatic. The fun comes with tying in lively Caribbean colors beyond the kitchen. Check Mandalay under “Featured Projects” at www.RAShawDesigns.com.

What’s one cool new trend you predict for 2014?

The move to LED lighting is an exciting trend. Being forced to move away from incandescent light bulbs is pushing the market to increased R&D and introduction of new and exciting lighting products. With the new LED light drivers and ability to not only dim but change colors opens up a whole new design component. We are moving away from using architectural light fixtures and increasing the use of recessed and directional LEDs highlighting interior features. The featured element becomes the fixture. LED lights allow us to really fine tune the feature with color and illumination like never before. Check Windermere House under “Featured Projects” at www.RAShawDesigns.com.

If you had an unlimited budget, what is the first change you would make to your own home or personal space?

If I had an unlimited budget and disruption was not an issue, I would change the floor tile in our home on a regular basis. The market in porcelain tile is growing so rapidly with new colors, sizes, textures, and patterns, floor tile change can significantly transform the space without changing any of the other elements. Variety is the spice of life...

What is the most difficult type of client to work with? What is your best advice for dealing with this type of client?

The most difficult client is one that struggles with giving final decisions. Indecision can be frustrating, time consuming, and costly. When confronted with this type of client, I focus on winning their confidence in our abilities to make all selections, and the final product will go beyond their expectations and approval. Site visits to past projects invariably wins them over to making this the only decision they need to make.
